Is the Arthur Sleep King Arthur mattress the perfect mattress for you? Here's everything you need to know about this pillowtop mattress!

Is King Arthur the king of the high-end mattresses? Not only did the name “King Arthur” make us want to get this mattress, but the price was very reasonable compared to similar mattresses. The Arthur Sleep King Arthur Mattress is a pillow-top mattress, which means an extra layer of comfort and plushness found at the top.

So, let's see whether it's the ideal mattress for you!

Who is the King Arthur mattress for?

As is often the case with pillow-top mattresses, the King Arthur is terrific for the side sleeping position. The extra layer of foam padding contours and cradles your body, but that's not all there is to this pocket spring. King Arthur's for:

What do we use this product for?

Like any other mattress, you'd rely on your new mattress to deliver you the best night's sleep you've had in a while. In this case, you can use this pocket-sprung pillow-top mattress for:

Features you should know about King Arthur mattress

Here are the features we kept in mind while conducting our King Arthur mattress review.

A close up image of the King Arthur mattress side
2000 pocket springs

Two layers of pocket springs for a total of 2000 springs are the main support system in this mattress.
These individually wrapped coils move independently from one another, so they can better contour your body and distribute your weight evenly. This leads to greatly reduced tossing and turning, as well as less partner disturbance during the night.

800 of these will be full-sized, support springs, while the other 1200, nestled in the pillow-top layer will be smaller, handling the weight distribution, pressure relief and comfort.

Luxurious layers of foam

Not only does the King Arthur mattress have a pillow top, but also several other layers of foam that work together to create a comfortable and supportive sleeping surface.

Both regular memory foam and reflex foam can be found in the pillow-top section of this mattress.
Memory foam is known for being cosy and pressure relieving, while reflex foam is bouncier and helps the mattress spring back into shape in no time.

Micro quilted & pillow topped

For that final touch of sumptuous comfort, King Arthur mattress is micro-quilted and pillow-topped.

The micro-spring, memory and reflex foam-filled pillow top will make you feel like you're sleeping on a cloud, while the micro-quilting adds an extra layer of durability to the mattress.

Medium firm tension

As a medium-firm mattress, the King Arthur is ideal for people who want a balance of comfort and support. Also, it should be pretty good for all sleeping positions.

Overall, the mattress is not too soft that you'll sink in and feel like you're stuck, but not too firm that it feels like you're sleeping on the floor.

Hypoallergenic

If allergies are a concern for you or your partner, King Arthur mattress could be a good choice.
While you might read that this one's anti-allergy, it's actually hypoallergenic, which means it's resistant to dust mites and other allergens. In other words, it won't cause any allergic reactions, but it won't necessarily protect you from them either.

Handles

While you don't need to flip the mattress over, rotating it from head to toe every few months will help it wear evenly and prolong its lifespan.

Luckily, the King Arthur mattress has handles on both sides, so you won't have to struggle when it's time to rotate this 34 cm deep beast of a bed.

Vacuum-packed delivery

Nowadays, it's a common practice for online mattress companies to deliver their products vacuum-packed.

As you can imagine, this makes for much more convenient delivery and easier mattress purchase, as all you have to do is click a button and wait for your new bed to show up at your doorstep, vacuum packed and ready to replace your old mattress.

5-year warranty

Most mattresses nowadays will last you around 7 or 8 years with proper care, but King Arthur mattress comes with a 5-year warranty.

While this is on the shorter side, it's still pretty good, and it just goes to show that Arthur Sleep is confident in the quality of its product.

So, how do all these features come together in the final product? Here's our King Arthur mattress review.

As soon as we laid down on the King Arthur mattress, we could feel the difference that the pillow-top makes. The top is cosy and welcoming, but not too sinky, so you won't feel like you're stuck in quicksand when you try and turn over. To be fair, ease of movement is probably due to medium-firm tension springs at the core, not the pillow-top, but you can quite separate the two when you're lying on the mattress.

Other than that, support and comfort feel very good for a mid-range mattress. We honestly didn't see any corners being cut in this department.

We didn't experience any back pain, and the mattress did a good job of distributing our weight evenly. Even stomach sleeping felt good.

Side sleepers should also be pleased with the King Arthur mattress, as it offers good pressure relief around the hips and shoulders.

Now, one thing did take us by surprise, and that's the fact that this mattress is pretty smelly. Even though this is not a memory foam mattress, the fire retardant spray used on foam is kind of overwhelming at first and will definitely linger for some time.

The common problems with the King Arthur mattress & how to solve them

We feel like parrots at this point, but the off-gassing is really quite overwhelming and might take some time to dissipate. If you're sensitive to smells, we'd suggest sleeping on the old bed for at least a week, while your new mattress spends some alone time in a well-ventilated room.

If you're all about mid-range pillow-top mattresses – we have another one for you.

Rest Assured Knowlton 2000 Pocket Latex Mattress

Product image of Rest Assured Knowlton 2000 Pocket Latex Mattress.

If you want a good pillowtop mattress that's a bit cheaper than the Arthur Mattress but is just as comfortable, we recommend giving this mattress a look!

For one, instead of just regular foam, the Knowlton 2000 uses latex to provide even better pressure relief and motion isolation. Plus, while it provides the same hugging sensation as foam, latex mattresses also have a bit more bounce.

And a bouncy filling plus 2000 springs means that your body will be properly supported all night long! But it won't come at the cost of your comfort as you still have that plush pillow top to make you feel like you're sleeping on a bunch of clouds.

So, if you want a solid pillowtop mattress that offers a similar but slightly different experience than the Arthur mattress, we'd recomment the Knowlton 2000!

Advantages

An icon depicting a latex material
Latex
Many will prefer latex over regular foam.
An icon depicting a man with pain in back
Great for back pain
Latex offers noticeable pressure relief.
An icon presenting perpetual motion balls indicating low motion transfer
No motion transfer
The mattress offers complete motion isolation.

Disadvantages

An icon depicting a stomach sleeper, illustrating product is not stomach sleeper friendly
Not ideal for stomach sleepers
Stomach sleepers might need a firmer mattress.
An icon representing a non-removable cover
Non-removable cover
This makes cleaning a bit more difficult.

What makes this product better than some other similar ones?

An image of King Arthur mattress handles.

It's not common for manufacturers to use dual layers of pocket springs unless they're producing a top-shelf product. Having an additional layer of mini pocket springs does quite a few things for the mattress.

It firstly ensures that no matter how you sleep, your weight will be evenly distributed and you won't end up with pressure points. And secondly, it makes the mattress that much bouncier and enjoyable – just in case you want to have a “bedroom wrestling exhibition” with your significant other.

How did we test the product?

An image of King Arthur mattress in a bedroom.

Testing the mattress involves a lot more than just sleeping on it for a night. We take into account the materials used, the build, the comfort, the support, the price, and many other factors which we test in the following manner:

  • Visual inspection
  • Hands-on inspection
  • Measured tests.

For example, if we wanted to test motion isolation, we'd do the following:

Is the King Arthur mattress eco-friendly or sustainable?

Sure, there isn't a lot about this mattress that can't be reused or repurposed. You could even recycle most of it. But that doesn't make it eco-friendly or sustainable.

There's polyurethane foam inside of this mattress, which is a petroleum-based product. It's not biodegradable and it takes quite a bit of energy to produce. The same goes for the fire retardant chemicals that are sprayed on the mattress. They're not good for the environment.

So, while you can technically recycle this mattress, we wouldn't call it a sustainable or eco-friendly option.

Overall impressions of the product after the testing

An image of King Arthur mattress top layer close up.

Overall, it's a decent mattress. It's comfortable and supportive and should suit most people. The manufacturer's suggestions meet the actual facts after the testing procedure, which is not something that's often the case – especially in this price range.

Now, is there room for improvement? Of course. Are any of the aforementioned issues a deal breaker? They could be.

But overall, we're pretty pleased. 7/10 from us.
